Fun and Games

In the early twentieth-century, department stores started to directly market to children. This window display clearly seeks to attract the attention of both boys and girls with its enticing model sets and overstuffed animals. Note how American commerce is still being influenced by European tastes, as the boy mannequin sports a British-style pith helmet and the stuffed animals are creatures from exotic colonial locales.
