The groundbreaking ceremony for Stilwell Retirement Residence occurred on November 29, 1962. Because the actual site for the building was too muddy, the ceremony occurred in a shopping center on Lake Air Drive, and Ella J. Smith, president of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, “broke ground” with a gold-painted shovel in a tub of dirt set aside for the occasion.
