Education and Opportunity

At the time of its formation in 1874, St. James provided a school for Black children in the area. The school continued to function throughout the early-mid twentieth century as white, segregated schools in the area refused to accept Black students. A.J. Moore High School, Waco’s African American High School, held classes at St. James after their building burned down in 1921.
