Repercussions

Wacoans did not always appreciate Gilbert’s activism for civil rights. His actions sometimes generated anonymous phone calls used to intimidate or threaten violence against Gilbert and his family. In September 1977, an unknown person set fire to the Gilbert home. Unable to move because of his illness, Gilbert’s neighbors entered the house and carried him out. Despite this violence, Gilbert penned this editorial in appreciation of the community’s response.
