The R. T. Dennis building originally had only three stories, but it grew before its destruction by the 1953 tornado. It stood at three stories until 1909, when two additional stories were added, and then the inside was redone to have eight floors including a basement. Though floors were added, no further reinforcements were made, making the building susceptible when the tornado hit.
