Gathering Place

The Farmer’s Bank sat between the Brazos River and the Mecca Drugstore on historic Bridge Street, which served as the center for minority businesses in the early twentieth century. The bank shared the street with businesses such as shops, restaurants, and barbershops. Sadly, the 1953 tornado destroyed many of the buildings, and only a few were rebuilt. In the 1960s, urban renewal leveled the remaining structures and displaced several minority businesses.
