Negro National League (c. 1922)

Although racial discrimination kept black baseball players from participating in the Major League, it did not mean only African Americans were involved in the Negro leagues. This photograph depicts the 1922 meeting of the Negro National League. Seated on the left of the front row is J. L. Wilkinson, creator and owner of the Kansas City Monarchs. Wilkinson is known for creating multiracial baseball teams in the early twentieth century and for signing Jackie Robinson to his first contract in 1945.
