Young Recruit

Longing to do his part to stop the Axis powers, Doris Miller enlisted in the US Navy in Dallas, Texas, on September 16, 1939. At the time, few real combat roles were available to African Americans due to policies of racial discrimination. Despite being able-bodied, Miller had to be satisfied with a service role in the USS West Virginia's mess hall.
